Not too long ago, I was forced to make a difficult decision.
I had to decide whether to continue to sustain the life of my cat, Kisa, or finally put her down. What was once considered a very difficult decision was made easier by how much I could tell she was hurting.
The signs were all there. By the time she was settled into a sitting position, it was time to move again. We barely saw her (some of this attributed to Payton, but Pook runs from her and still is seen a lot during the day), she was peeing on just about anything that was on the floor, she was barely eating, and she wasn't drinking much either. You could look at her and tell something was wrong with her.
The initially possibility of putting her down was raised earlier this year. We took her to the vet, had her checked out, and got a relatively clean bill of health all things considered. We put her on a wet food diet and she seemed to be rebounding some. She didn't come out much still, but when we did see her, she looked a lot better.
That didn't last long though. She slowly started to thin out again and the rate that she was peeing on things was steadily increasing. It was getting to the point that it was a surprise when we didn't find something peed on, usually in Payton's room. Then, a couple of months ago, we were fortunate enough to see a kitten running around outside. This kitten became Goobie, had a worm in her head, and became Pook's new best friend. Kisa started to come out more, but it was mostly because Goobs liked to run under the bed.
A few weeks ago, it was decided that it was time. I let my mom and sister know and took a Friday off of work so I could take her up to Rachel's work and have the final act done.
On September 14th, Kisa took her final breath and was removed from her pain.
I've had plenty of time to reflect on this moment, reflect on what happened. I've been able to think about the memories I shared with this cat, and marvel at the fact that she lived nearly 19 years. She went from a petrified kitten hiding under my bed, to my constant companion no matter where I lived, to barely being seen in her final months.
When she was a kitten, she was extremely tempermental. Yes, she played like most kittens, but everything was on her terms. If she was laying on you and you moved, you received one growling warning, then you were clawed and she'd jump down in disdain. She bit my mom the one and only time my mom attempted to give her a bath. In fact, my mom was bitten by Kisa on two different occasions, the only time the cat seriously bit anyone.
Okay, so there was the one time when I was holding her (something I did frequently until she got older and decided she didn't like it anymore) and she was licking my nose (a Kisa trademark), when she suddenly decided she wanted down. Her way of letting me know? Chomping down on my nose and then jumping down.
I was clawed a few times, usually in the brief moments that she did decide to play, but other than that, her preferred bonding method was to sleep right up against me every night.
In short, she was a good cat.
Until she got older, cranky, and decided that displaying her mood meant peeing on things.
In that regard, putting her to sleep was easy. I was tired of constantly washing clothes that had been peed on, tired of finding the spots on the carpet. It had reached the point where it was a burden on me, in addition to be an annoyance to Rachel as it was usually hers or Payton's clothes that Kisa decided to whiz on. Her best days were behind her and keeping her alive didn't serve any purpose other than to have to clean up more messes.
Even so, it wasn't easy to do. My sister was there, and as often is the case with her, was a tad emotional during the event. The hardest part for me was after it was done, she was buried and we went home.
It's been those quiet moments where I'm either the only one still awake, or by myself, and I think about her. I think about her giving one last annoyed meow as the vet injected her. I think about her breathing just stopping, eyes still open, and it hurts my heart everytime I think about it. I sit and wonder what she's thinking as her body functions shut down almost instantly.
It tears at me, mostly because for more than 18 years, this cat was the one constant in my life. Work could stink, family could be gone, friends could be busy, but there was one thing I could count on when I was at home in my room, and that was that Kisa was going to be there, and she was going to be happy to see me.
The last year and nearly four months have given me something else constant: a loving girlfriend and her daughter, but saying goodbye to those 18 plus years wasn't easy. Luckily, there's a lot to look forward to. I do have Rachel, Payton, Pook, Shenzie, Goobie, and Turk. I still have family and friends who have been there for years now.
Her death was a challenge, but I'll never forget Kisa and what she brought to my life. Her death was a release for both of us, just in different ways.

A night with the Tribe
Imagine how much fun we would've had if the Cleveland Indians would've won last night?
In what was an uninspiring offensive performance (0 runs on 2 hits), the Indians fell to the Oakland Athletics 3-0.
I had a feeling about what kind of night it was going to be when we sat down in our seats, I saw Fausto/Roberto Carmona/Hernandez pitching, runners on base, and no idea who was at shortstop, third base, or left field. Also, the sight of Matt LaPorta at first base led to a mini-game of nicknames involving his last name (LaStrikeout, LaPopout, LaCaughtlookingagain) later in the game as he came up with runners on base.
I also knew what kind of night it was going to be when the A's hitters were putting Hernandez's pitches in the air, a bad sign for a sinkerball pitcher. Oh, and the home run in the second inning. That was a bad sign too.
Seriously, the game itself was a trainwreck. Hernandez was gone in the third inning (still have no clue what happened, but that's mostly because I wasn't paying attention at the time and have yet to read about it) and his relief pitched a whole lot better than he did.
Then I figured out Jason Donald was at third base, Brent Lillibridge was at short, and Shelly Duncan was in left field. That did NOT ease my concerns about the offense in the least.
While the A's were putting runners on base for the first few innings, the Indians were trying to see how quickly they could get back into the field. There were so many 3 and 4 pitch at-bats that it was becoming contagious almost. As if it were the only way it could end, Michael Brantley (aka Milton Bradley) struckout looking at three straight fastballs in the ninth with two runners on base.
This was our second game this year and the two games couldn't have been more different. The first game against the Mariners the Indians put up 10 runs off of Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners on Puppypalooza night. It was fun, the atmosphere was great, and the fans were into the game. Last night? Mostly empty, fans were bored, and even Rachel and I were entertaining ourselves for the most part.
Some random moments from the game included Rachel guessing pinch hitter when she meant switch hitter, confusing Milton Bradley and Michael Brantley, me saying the bathead when farther than the bat when I meant to say farther than the ball, her looking up a player she thought played for the Indians and telling me he made $48,000, I mean $408,000, I mean $480,000 this season.
We still had fun at the game, which is pretty much how things go when we go out into public. The game was dull, but we made it entertaining for ourselves more than most ever could've.
I don't know if we're going to make it to anymore games this season. I don't want to rule it out, but at this stage, I'd rather save the money and try to get to a Browns game instead. I mean, sure they're probably going to stink again (lots of rookies and young players on both sides, plus injuries), but we didn't get to go last year and we both love the Browns.
As for the Indians, I can't begin to understand how two years in a row they go from first place to being the bottom of the barrel in baseball. This year's collapse is even worse than last year's since they supposedly had learned from last year.
So instead, I will focus on the upcoming Browns and Buckeyes football seasons since, well, it's almost football season and nothing says American like grown men smashing into each other in front of replacement officials.
Oy.

It might kill me...
But I'm going to do it anyway.
Before I divulge the details of what I'm going to embark on next month, let me start by saying that I know it's been a while since I've written. Things have been busy and aren't going to slow down in the next few months. I've been working out several times a week, doing things with Rachel on the weekend, and keeping busy other times with various things.
Yesterday began an 8 week fitness class, which should help me prepare for what I'm going to do. It was quite the contrast from what I'd normally do in a workout, but it's also what I need to do. I can run with no issue and lift moderately heavy weights with no issue, but flexibility and overall fitness was something I was concerned with.
After yesterday, I'm convinced that in 8 weeks, I'll be in the best shape of my life. On the days I don't go to the class, I intend to continue with my regular workouts in my attempt to get stronger, as well as continue to run regularly.
What is getting me to do this? One, Rachel just finished the class and raved about it, even as she talked about how she was dying afterwards. Two, I tend to watch a lot of videos on youtube by a guy named Paul (www.youtube.com/paulsoaresjr) who primarily plays Minecraft and records his various adventures in the game. During one of his more recent videos, he talked about the Tough Mudder that he participated in. For those who don't know, click on the link. In essence, it's a 10-12 mile run/obstacle course that isn't for the faint of heart.
No, I'm not doing that.
But after talking to Rachel about it, she brought the Warrior Dash, a similar event, just not quite as long. The obstacles are just as daunting however and while looking at it, decided it was something I wanted to attempt before taking on the Tough Mudder, possibly next year. At the time, I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to register though because slots were filling up quickly and extra money hasn't exactly been laying around.
That said, as of today, I'm registered for the event on August 26th at 12:30pm. I already know one other person who's going to be participating and there's the possibility that Rachel will sign up as well, although she isn't sure as of this writing.
That's right, I'm going to be running in the Warrior Dash. That's not all though. I don't have a lot of details yet, but I'm going to be raising money for St. Judes as well. The initial goal is to raise $250. How it all works, I'm not sure yet. I have to wait to hear from a representative about that. Once I do I'll have more information up in here as well as on my facebook page.
I figured I wasn't going to be able to donate much, so I'll do this instead and see if people want to help in that manner. $250 is a small amount, but it's a good cause and if I get lucky, I might even be able to raise a little more than that.
At this point, I'm not going to worry about where I finish. I just want to be able to say I finished the event and by the end of next summer, say I finished the Tough Mudder as well.
The next few months are going to be hectic. I can't promise a lot of writing even though I've had a ton of ideas, so there might be moments where a bunch of posts go up at once with a lot of dead time in between.
Look for some sports posts, memory posts, and a couple of really random posts as well in the next few weeks, especially as I get closer to my death, er, dash.

The 2 & 1/2 year-old just licked me
There are times when you're not sure how to title a brief blog post.
Then Payton came over and randomly licked my wrist, therefore solving the issue of what to title this post.
This is just a quick update to let everyone know about some blog ideas that I have for the near future....and I just was licked again by both Rachel and Payton, then tickled relentlessly before running Payton after Rachel and tickling her on the bed.
Now they're painting nails.
Things really happen fast around here sometimes.
Now, where was I?
Oh yeah, blog posts. I will be blogging more about the current Tribe season (at least when I get the chance to watch them), about the Cavs in free agency, and about the Browns training camp. That will cover the sports mixer portion. I'm also going to be blogging about Minecraft and how it's sucked me in, along with a YouTube channel that I have been following for a while about a guy who is very, very good at the game, plays with his wife and kids, and makes even the most mundane video interesting.
I'm limiting work posts to a blog I privately maintain unless it's something I certain won't cause issues.
In terms of memory posts, I have plenty of material to work with, it's just a matter of remembering things and getting the thoughts onto paper so when I write, I have something I can check to make sure I'm getting the story straight.
There will certainly be other posts that come along, especially since a lot has been going on this summer already (can you believe it's already July?), including baseball games, workouts in the park, trips to the pool/beach, trips to Cedar Point, and other summertime activities that we are going to undertake.
This weekend in fact has been an example of how busy things can get. Friday night we went to the Rascal Flatts show (very entertaining show but even more entertaining walk back to the Jeep), Saturday there was an adventurous inventory followed by a nice, long run at night. Today we went for a lengthy walk with Shenzie, I worked out twice, and we both got a run in before the storm hit and Payton came home.
I'm trying to get caught up on all the stuff before I post it, plus post in my pharmacy blog and my latest addition, a blog over at Game Informer that I intend to use more for video game related stuff, which means the video game section on this blog may get replaced with a different section.
I haven't decided yet.
I hope everyone's enjoying their summers and enjoys what I write when I do find time to write.
Now, back to the excitement here.

Randomocity
I have been a horrible blogger this year.
I came into the new year with the idea that I would blog more this year. Then I decided once Rachel, Payton, and I were living together, I'd start blogging more. Then I decided once everything was settled in the new apartment I'd start blogging more.
Yeah, see what happened was, I didn't.
Yes, things have been busy. We had to decide where we were going to leave. Then we decided to get a puppy and name her Shenzie. That took time as we had to get her to stop peeing and pooping in the apartment (which has become infinitely easier now that we're on ground floor).
In short, it's been kind of hectic, but not too terribly bad either.
If I wanted to cover everything that's gone on since January, it would take several posts.
I would like to cover it all and get into a regular writing routine (complete with themes for different days like I originally wanted to do), but I'm not going to promise anything. Yes, Rachel has a laptop that I can use, but I don't like sitting on it and using it a lot since it's not mine, and lord knows when I start writing, I can get carried away in a hurry sometimes.
I've had a couple ideas for blogs too recently, so I would like to put those thoughts into words. One was going to be about LeBron James (I know, but I wanted to try to put it all into perspective and not just bash the guy again), another about how animals can bring both joy and heartbreak, and a few other ideas that have popped in my head.
There are of course things to talk about with the sports teams. The Browns just drafted 11 guys and a few are going to be expected to make immediate impacts. The Cavs just finished a difficult, but easier to watch season with Kyrie Irving leading the way (and winning rookie of the year; the way he handled himself this year itself is an entry itself), and the Indians again competing for the division with a good start to the season.
I could write about Minecraft, which I just got into and am admittedly addicted to. It's like playing SimCity and Zelda at the same time. That and watching the Rooster Teeth guys make a hysterical video about it shows how incredible this game can be.
**Intermission**
The video shows what happens when four guys who have never played the game try to take on a guy who has played it and knows what he's doing. In the end, the house the four of them built gets burned down after Gavin decides he's heard enough of their trash talk, gathers some lava, and dumps it on their house while they're not looking.
**End Intermission**
The thing that's scary about Minecraft is I haven't really done much in it, yet I've played for several hours now. In fact, it took forever for me to build my shelter because I kept changing how I wanted it to look, plus it took a minute for me to figure out what to build it with.
Yes, I know. I should be able to figure it out quickly.
But I don't play games a lot anymore, so when I do play, I don't typically have a ton of time to figure things out. I play by the seat of my pants so to speak, which means I died a few times because I didn't understand how the monster system worked, or how to sleep through the night to avoid getting massacred. In fact, it took a while for me to figure out how to make a bed in the first place.
Now I'm fairly deep into the crafting system and have dug a substantial tunnel under my shelter. I intend to keep on digging down until I can't anymore, hit a dungeon, or die.
All in all, things have come together pretty well. Shenzie is now like a normal dog, not completely timid and unsure of what's going on. We did attempt to rescue a puppy that was born unexpectedly at Rachel's work, but sadly, the pups we took did not make it, nor did the other two that were born the same day.
Rachel has been much happier since switching to a new job where the stress level is nothing like the previous job. My mom is much happier since she removed the leech from her home.
As I said, I do want to write more when I get the chance. There are always things going on to talk about and I've always been less stressed (not that I am now mind you) when I'm consistently writing about the things going on through my head.
It's just a matter of writing them out.

falling flat
I've never been short on ideas for blog posts.
In the past, I've come up with several good ideas. Sometimes I'd even get started on them for a while.
Then, after a while, I'd start to slack off for a while before the idea completely fell off the track.
Most of the time it's been due to lack of writing. I'd start off strong for a week or so, then the amount of writing would decrease slowly and surely as I just felt no motivation to go forward with the post. Often times, it's because the idea seemed really good in theory, but when it came to executing the idea, I realized it wasn't as good as I thought.
For example, back in 1999 when I was writing on my old web site, I was very much into the Indians and what appeared to be a season for the ages. Every time I wrote something, I finished with a recap of that days Indians' game. I'd give the score, the records, and a brief rundown of the game. I kept it up for half the season, then sometime after the All-Star break, I either lost interest in the idea or got sick of doing it.
It's kind of hard to remember at this point.
More recently, specifically last year's playoffs, I started to capsule previews of NFL playoff games all the way through the Pro-Bowl. I had some fun with it and was going to do it again this year, except, well, I didn't.
I can't really explain why. I kept thinking about starting it up, but then I wouldn't.
So now I have come up with a new idea for this blog. Or my pharmacy blog. I can't decide which to use it on, which would be the first issue since I can't use it on both and possibly give away what little anonymity I have on my pharmacy blog.
Hmm. That means I can't tell what the idea is if I intend to use it on the pharmacy blog because then when it shows up there, it would give away which blog is mine.
I guess I should've figured that part out first.
Oh well.
The idea revolves around a theme for each day of the week. For instance, I could call Friday Flashback Fridays and post some story from my younger years (which makes me feel old just writing that). Of course to do that requires me coming up with whimsical names (hey, Whimsical Wednesday?) for each day of the week and actually stick with it, which isn't likely. It also makes more sense if I write every day, thus justifying the different names for each day I post, but we know that won't happen.
In any case, that's an idea that's floating around in my head, partially because I have nothing else to do in my free time when I'm not with Rachel than to think of silly things like that.
Now then, back to the focus of the week.
Tomorrow is kind of a day of reckoning when it comes to Kisa. It's at least the first step in deciding what to do with her. Put her down and spend the next month remembering all the moments I've had with her? Keep her alive a little longer because her health isn't as bad as feared and do everything to make her remaining time comfortable?
It's kind of a troubling thing to think about really. I almost feel like a God wielding power over a helpless being. Whether she lives or dies is in my hands.
I've spent the last two days really thinking about all the things that have happened with her over the years. I'm not so much upset at the idea of her possibly being euthanized as maybe some might be, but that's mostly because I've already come to terms with the fact that one day she will be gone. I'm calm about it because as I've stated, she's given me almost 18 good years. It's more than I ever could've hoped for and I know I'll be making an informed decision, not just saying I'm done for the hell of it or keeping her alive longer than she should be.
Having Kisa has been an amazing experience. There's never been any doubts about her being my cat. When I've been gone for a couple days and come home again, she follows me around for a while. She's always slept either next to me or on top of me. When I sit down on the couch, she's right there looking for a lap to lay on.
One of my favorite memories is when we lived in Brunswick and I worked at CVS in Strongsville til 10. I had worked the same shifts for a while and my mom started to tell me how right around when I was supposed to be home, she'd go over to the front door and sit and wait for me. This went on for the longest time, at least up until I started hanging out with Mike regularly after work.
I apologize in advance if I spend a lot of time remembering things with Kisa.
I have almost 18 years worth of memories to possibly catch up on.
Oh, and don't hold your breath on the format thing for the blog. I'll probably forget by tonight anyway.
In the past, I've come up with several good ideas. Sometimes I'd even get started on them for a while.

error, error
It was brought to my attention that I made several errors in one of my recent blogs. I neglected to mention that the other night, Payton came up on the couch with me, sat just like me, and began telling me all about her experience when she was at the Disney on Ice show. She told me all about seeing Tinkerbell, Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, and the Alligators fighting.
She made sure to point out that her shirt had Tinkerbell on it.
I can't believe I didn't think about this when writing before.
I also forgot to mention Tara when talking about ex-girlfriends. I have no idea how I left her out, but I did.
And it was especially funny to hear Kelley rant about how in my "Cast of Characters" section, I mention she wants to cut me without mentioning that it's usually after I've antagonized her for several hours before she says that to me.
There are also a few grammatical and spelling errors, but I probably won't fix them right away, if I do at all.
I just wanted to set the record straight.
What I won't correct is how I feel about Rachel. All the things I said I stand by, even if she disagrees with me.
I love the woman and all the things she brings to the relationship.
